Rooted in creativity, nature, and community, Calgo Gardens has been a cherished destination since its founding in 1948 by pioneering businesswoman Charlotte Hirsh. Originally established in Ocean County, the business found new life under the stewardship of landscape designer Mark Estomin, who purchased it in 1978. Alongside his wife, Penny, they infused Calgo with a unique blend of artistry and horticultural expertise, relocating to Freehold in 2010 to continue their vision.
Today, Calgo Gardens is more than a nursery; it is a sanctuary where the lines between indoor and outdoor living blur harmoniously. From thoughtfully designed landscapes to artisan-crafted gifts in The Barn, every corner reflects Mark and Penny’s dedication to “harmony by design.” Their commitment to community and sustainable living has not gone unnoticed; in 2023, Calgo Gardens was honored as an Eastern regional finalist in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s America’s Top Small Business Awards.
At Calgo Gardens, visitors are invited to explore lush gardens, participate in enriching workshops, and connect with a community that values the beauty of nature and the joy of creativity. Whether you’re seeking inspiration for your own garden or a peaceful retreat, Calgo Gardens offers a welcoming experience for all.
While rooted in rich history, Calgo Gardens continues to thrive as a vibrant, family-run destination. Mark and Penny remain at the heart of it all, with Mark lending his vision and hands-on expertise throughout the nursery and Penny lovingly curating The Barn, our thoughtfully stocked gift shop.
Today, the next generation has taken the reins, with Mark and Penny’s three children proudly continuing the Calgo legacy. Drew leads our hardscape division with a passion for design and detail. David, a master landscaper, brings gardens to life with creativity and deep horticultural knowledge. Carrie keeps the engine running smoothly behind the scenes, managing operations and ensuring everything flows with care.
Supporting the family is a loyal and highly skilled team, many of whom have been with Calgo for years. Kyle, our master mason, leads the hardscape crew with precision and artistry. Jose, Carlos, Ezell, Jose Hernandez, and many others pour dedication into every patio, garden, and path they touch. Their craftsmanship and pride in their work are what make each Calgo project not just beautiful but meaningful.
At Calgo Gardens, we are not just building landscapes; we are cultivating spaces where people feel at home.
At Calgo Gardens, our roots run deep not just in the soil but in the community we proudly call home. As we look to the future, our goal is simple: to continue growing with the same integrity, creativity, and care that have shaped us for decades.
We believe in being more than a business; we want to be a neighbor, a partner, and a place of connection. Whether it’s hosting local events, opening our grounds for community gatherings, or simply offering a peaceful space to visit, we are here to support and enrich the lives around us.
As we move forward, we remain committed to fostering relationships, sharing our space, and giving back to the neighborhood that has given us so much. Because at Calgo Gardens, community is not just part of what we do; it is part of who we are.
